Thank you for your interest in responding to The Scattered Pelican’s Calls. To facilitate the editing process, please ensure that all submissions are in accord with the criteria below, and are accompanied with a separate statement with your name, email address, academic affiliation, and a biography of no more than 100 words (unless stated otherwise in the call).
What do we accept?
- The Scattered Pelican accepts submissions year-round, however, since many of our issues are themed issues, check our previous issues and our latest call before sending unsolicited submissions. We accept full-length journal article as well as academic reviews of books based on our annual calls. Reviews must be 1000-3000 words, while journal articles must be between 4000-7000 words. The word count must be inclusive of the Works Cited and endnotes. If submitting a journal article, please include a brief abstract and 3-5 keywords.
- We also accept creative works that have any form of critical/theoretical edge, as well as translations of both literary and scholarly works from other languages. Creative writings must be under 1000 words, but they can (optionally) be accompanied by a short 300-600 words reflective writing about the theoretical intentions behind it. Other forms of creative works (painting, photography, etc.) need a mandatory 500-word “reflective artist statement” about the themes of the work and/or the creation process. Translations of scholarly or literary works in other languages must be original and between 1500-3000 words, and they can (optionally) be accompanied by a reflective essay about the work or the process/challenges of translation written by the translator of a length no more than 1000 words. Translations must be accompanied by a document proving that the translator has the rights related to both translating the work and publishing the translation.
Important Formatting Guidelines (Articles & Review Submissions):
Formatting follows the general conventions of MLA 9th Edition. A more detailed guideline specifying The Scattered Pelican’s specific criteria can be found here.
Important Formatting Guidelines (Translation & Creative Submissions):
Our specified formatting for translated/creative works is under revision. In the meantime, you should follow the information in this page, any part of the “Article/Review” guidelines (above) that is relevant to translated/creative submissions, and whenever nothing is specified, follow MLA style 9th Edition.
How to Submit:
- All submissions must be submitted directly through our Submission Form. This is because we use double-blind review and using the form ensures an anonymized submission.
- We strongly discourage authors from depositing articles in pre-print archives prior to a peer-review assessment as this can compromise the blind review process.
- Our review process takes approximately 6-8 months. For accepted articles, publication of the article can take between 3-12 months after the notice of acceptance.
- If for any reason you cannot use the form, or have any other inquiries about submissions (specifically), you can contact submissions@thescatteredpelican.com. Unless you have an unresolvable problem with the form, we do not accept submission through email.
Authors can review our Copyright Policy and Academic and Ethical Commitments, which includes our definition of original work and our approach towards the use of generative AI, amongst other things.
